IEE in very active in encouraging its members to undertake Continuous Professional Development (CPD) activities. One component of their CPD programme is attending accredited training courses, and to help members in doing this, the Institution maintains a database of several thousand training courses and other events.
The database was developed on a desktop PC using Microsoft Access, and was orginally used by IEE staff answering members queries by telephone or letter. However, with the growing popularity of the Internet, the IEE recognised the benefit of providing Web access to the events database.
The Institution is very conscious of security, and has always operated behind a very tightly configured firewall. MS Access on a desktop PC was not considered a suitable platform from which to provide web access to the database, particularly one that also contained sensitive information.
Because we had already built a web interface to their legacy library catalogue system, the IEE decided to approach Interactive Information about building an interface to their events database.
